Connection to Culture

Learning together… ARDS recently collaborated with Djalkiri Foundation, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, Miwatj Health and Country Connect for a culture camp at Gulkula. From August 23-25, the Connection to Culture camp helped youth connect to elders through kinship (gurruṯu).

Schools from the Miwatj area joined on the Wednesday for a day of activities to learn about emotions, country, and women’s roles in caring for country, and kinship. We hope to reconnect women to Milkarri, or female song lines. ARDS shared Milkarri resources such as Bulunu Milkarri (film), Buku-waṯthunawuy Nininyŋu Rom – Manikay, dhäwu ga matha gurraŋay 1 and 2 (booklet with CD). We also recorded some people’s reflections and experiences from the camp. You can hear their stories on Yolŋu Radio.

We want to thank all of those who attended, and we look forward to doing this again!
