Strong traditions
It is a priority of ARDS to continue recording and documenting traditional knowledge, stories, songs and ceremonies. We are committed to supporting Aboriginal cultures and languages to remain vibrant and strong. Our well-established relationships with Indigenous communities allow us to work together to document, record and share (where appropriate) Indigenous law and knowledge.
To date we have worked primarily in northeast Arnhem Land and have a large database of Dhuwa and Yirritja recordings that are available to the appropriate Yolŋu (Yolngu) clan groups on request.
Songs and stories that are appropriate to share publicly are regularly played on Yolŋu Radio with the relevant clans permission.
We are committed to providing opportunities for Aboriginal people to record their own traditional knowledge. For many years we have been funded for a Strong Traditions project to employ and train Yolŋu to capture their communities’ stories and songs.
