About the programs.
ARDS has created a huge range of audio and radio programs exploring legal terms and topics to assist Indigenous people to better navigate the justice system. The programs are broadcast on Yolŋu Radio and available online.
A core example of why the program is important.
“A man came to East Arnhem Mediation in Galiwin'ku asking for help to understand why his son seemed to be in such serious trouble with the police. He produced seven bail documents that listed numerous offences and seven warrants for non-appearances at court. When asked if he understood the true meaning of the English word 'bail', he said he did not know.
A senior woman and man from the Yolŋu (Yolngu) Police Advisory Group in Galiwin'ku, Makarr Dhuni, were also present. Despite their excellent English conversational skills, neither of them understood the English term either.
