Yolŋu Radio at Garma Festival 2019

Yolŋu Radio at Garma Festival 2019

ARDS Aboriginal Corporation and Yolŋu Radio have been closely associated with the Garma Festival since 2015 and the 2019 Garma Festival, held on Gumatj land at Gulkula, forty kilometres from Nhulunbuy, was our most successful festival yet.

As a Garma delivery partner, Yolŋu Radio covered forums and key speeches, interviewed VIPs and broadcast the buŋguls and musical acts. Legendary senior dance man Andrew Gurruwiwi commented on the buŋguls for Yolŋu Radio, although one afternoon Andrew put down his microphone jumped up, and to the cheers of the crowd, joined in the dancing.

ARDS Vice-Chair Gawura Waṉambi spoke at the Economic Development Forum on the Sunday, addressing how cultural differences in northeast Arnhem Land can lead to misunderstanding between Yolŋu and Balanda. His call for more empathy between Balanda and Yolŋu, and better understanding of Yolŋu culture for government employees was well received by the audience.
