ARDS Projects
As a fee-for-service organisation ARDS is involved in numerous education based projects within north east Arnhem Land, as well as in Darwin. These include:
- Bridging the Gap
seminars for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
covering subjects such as cultural awareness, community development,
effective communication, community education and traditional
law
- Yolngu Radio
broadcasting education programs, traditional and contemporary Yolngu
music and a limited news service 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week
- a Language
Centre providing language learning material
and the recording of academic Yolngu Matha (the language of the
Yolngu people). This has led to the development of English to Yolngu Matha
dictionaries
in the commerce, legal and health fields as a starting
point
- resource
development which includes producing written material and
website material to inform non-Yolngu people about Yolngu culture and
way of life, so these people will be better informed to work and
interact in a more culturally appropriate way
- patient health
educators based at Royal Darwin Hospital providing education
for Indigenous people on health issues affecting them
- a recording and
archiving service of the traditional academic
knowledge of the region, including all public song cycles
which cover history, law, commerce, conservation, land management,
religion and philosophy
- consultancies
to various Yolngu businesses and community government councils
- advocacy
services on behalf of Yolngu people on a whole range of
issues, including the recognition of traditional Madayin law,
equitable access to information and education, and consideration of
Yolngu people’s rights and desires in relation to legislation
To ensure we provide a valuable community service to Indigenous people, ARDS also remains focused on:
- creating an accessible knowledge
centre for the preservation of intellectual capital for the Yolngu
clan nations
- the development of effective
cross-cultural and cross-language educational methodologies
- the development of effective
educational content material that can teach subjects concerning any
health issues, contemporary commerce and law issues
- improving economic, legal and
health literacy for the whole region, through face-to-face
education
- the training and deployment of
community educators, health educators and hospital educators for ARDS
and for health and education organisations in other regions throughout
Australia
- the development of effective media access to information concerning specialist topics in the people’s own language, including radio, e-classrooms and video production.
